china is a unitary and multi-national country. apart from the hans, there are 55 minority nationalities. they account for 8.41 percent of the total population. (according to 2000 census, population of chinese mainland reached 1. 26465303 billion, of whom 106. 465303 million are minority people and are distributed widely over 50 to 60 percent of the total area of the country)

the chinese government has paid much attention to training cadres from the minority people. early in 1941, during the anti-japanese war, an institute of nationalities was set up in yan'an to bring up minority cadres to serve the chinese revolution. after 1949 a dozen and more such institutes were established in beijing and elsewhere for training minority cadres.

the university was established in 1951 by the central government aiming to educate officials and various professionals for the country's 55 ethnic groups. over the past 50 years, more than 60, 000 officials and various academics have graduated from the university. most of them have become part of the backbone of different fields in minority regions. many of them have become top officials in central government and provincial governments.

on june 14, 2001, premier zhu rongji made the remarks when he inspected the central university of nationalities, which was celebrating its 50th anniversary. he called for more efforts to develop education for national minorities, which is vital to promote the economic development in minority regions and strengthen the harmony of various nationalities in the country.
