china art gallery is located in wu si street. it is a national level art gallery focused on displaying, collecting and researching the works arts of the artists in china modern times. chairman mao zedong wrote the name of the gallery. china art gallery covers the areas of 30,000 square meters with its construction acreage of 17,051 square meters. and its exhibition hall is 6,000 square meters. the construction was started in 1958 and finished in 1962. it is one of the great ten constructions in the 10th anniversary of the founding of the people's republic of china and also the largest art gallery in china.

its main construction is the modern constructions imitate the ancient attic style. its top is decorated by the yellow glazed tiles. there are the corridors and pavilions around. it is filled with the distinctive nationality construction style. the gallery can be divided to three levels: the upper, middle and lower lever respectively. there are totally 13 exhibition halls in the gallery, and the three collective anti-ultraviolet radiation colors fluorescent lamps are illuminating in the halls. the acreage of the round hall is 480 square meters that is suited for hanging the large-sized art works. the acreages of the east and west side halls in the first floor are 470 square meters respectively that are equipped with large glass exhibition cabinets. while each of the four corner halls cover the area of 500 square meters; the exhibition places of the second and third floors are opposed to the main hall; the new painting collecting storeroom occupies the area of 5,000 square meters.

in the gallery, there are fine arts works exhibiting & marketing hall and art works service department. it is aimed to collect, safeguard, exhibit and research the excellent fine works both in china modern times and from the folk; hold various kinds of domestic and foreign fine arts exhibition; conduct domestic and foreign fine arts academy exchange; build up china modern fine arts historic documents and art files as well as edit and publish the collecting works picture albums and theoretic corpuses in line with president jiang zemin's writing "making effort to build a modern art gallery with chinese features".

the art gallery has collected more than 60,000 fine arts works in the modern times and from the folks. its varieties includes excellent works with different time features and different art styles like chinese paintings, canvases, prints, sculptures, spring festival pictures, funnies, picture posters, pencil sketches, iconography, watercolor paintings, varnish paintings. it also includes the agrestic art works like puppets, shadow play works, paper-cuts, kites, mud toys, embroideries and so on. the art masters had lots of contributions to the gallery, they are zhao zhiqian, shi tao, zhu da, ren bonian, xu gu, wu changshuo, qi baishi, huang binhong, xu beihong in ming and qing dynasties and modern times and the famous painters li keran, zhang daqian, fu baoshi, pan tianshou, li kuchan, qian song, shi lu, lin fengmian, liu haisu, liu kaiqu, wu zuoren, jiang zhaohe, gu yuan, zhang leping, cui zifan, he haixia, yang zhiguang and so on in the contemporary era. the representative works of luo gongliu, huang zhou, wu guanzhong are also collected in the gallery. the collecting works also includes lots of the excellent works of many middle aged and young painters. the german collectors ludwig and his wife contributed 117 western arts to the gallery. among which, there are four works of picasso, which is the first collected foreign art works.

ever since the opening of the gallery, it held all previous rounds of the national fine arts exhibition and more than 60 gallery collected works exhibitions. the exhibition activities individual painting exhibitions, collective painting exhibitions, film exhibitions, calligraphy exhibitions, children's painting and folk fine works exhibitions are increased gradually. in the recent five years, the averages times exceed 180. during 1980s, more than one hundred foreign art works exhibitions were held in the gallery, such as the french countryside landscape painting exhibition in the 19th century, the american famous original painting exhibitions of boston museum, rodin art works exhibition, western painting famous works exhibition as well as lots of the fine arts exhibitions of austria, japan, russia, germany, korea, malaysia, norway, israel and other counties. in order to celebrate hong kong's return to china, it held hong kong art gallery selected art works exhibition. in 1998, it held the international fine arts year that won the high praise from all walks of life in society. the annual average visitors numbers is one million.
