yanjing is the former name of beijing. referring to the eight attractions emperor qianlong (1736-1795) of the qing dynasty celebrated in his poetry, the eight scenic spots are as follows:
qiongdao chunyin (jade islet spring shade/ jade islet in shady springtime) it is a tablet on the eastern hill side of jade flower islet in beihai park.
springtime clouds and fog used to float around the forested islet, completely shading it.
yuquan baotu (leopard leaping the fountain of yuquan)
it erupts from a cave at the foot of yuquan (jade spring) mountain in the western suburbs of beijing. spring water winds from the "cave's" mouth where yuquan is inscribed around the mountain, inspiring the name yuquan cuihong (yuquan falling rainbow).
taiye qiufeng (autumn wind of taiye [pool of great secretion]/ autumn winds on taiye) it is a tablet in shuiyunxie pavilion located on the eastern bank of zhonghai lake at jiniaoyu bridge's southern end. composed of beihai and zhonghai lakes, taiye lake offers a breadth of fresh air within the city proper.
jimen yaushu (fog tree of jimen/ trees in the mist at ji gate) it is a tablet that stands on the relic of xitucheng (west earth wall) just outside xizhimen near xueyuanlu road in western beijing.
xishan qingxue (sunny western hills after snow / sunny or snowy days of western hills)
it refers to the fragrant hills, the section of the western hill closest to the city. the fragrant hills are beautiful in any season. snow covers the hills during the winter while aromatic flower bloom during the spring and summer; in autumn, a palette of red, orange and yellow leaves decorate the hillsides.
lugou xiaoyue (morning moon over lugou bridge / moon over the lugou bridge at dawn)
it refers to a steel erected at lugou qiao (marco polo bridge).
the name morning moon over lugou bridge refers to emperor qianlong's poem celebrating the bridge. the 485 lion statues perch on the bridge's balustrades seem to be playing with each other under a full autumn moon.
jintai xizhao (sunset of jintai / golden terrace in the glow of the setting sun)
it refers to the tablet once erected in an eastern suburb of beijing. when king yanzhao of the spring and autumn period (770 bc-476 bc) sought a truly virtuous person, he built a platform on which he placed piles of gold; thus, the platform became known as "jintai" or "gold platform."
juyong diecui (the great wall surrounded by lush greenery at the juyong pass / layers of green mounts near juyong pass)
it refers to a tablet originally erected at the southeast part of juyong pass. with only a narrow gorge connecting the north and south sections, the mountain area near juyong pass is very perilous. however, a view from the foot of the gorge up toward the mountains offers a bird's eye view of wild flowers and rolling green hills.
