the seven star park, in the east of guilin, is situated by the side of the seven star hill, where is also the location of the seven star cave. the park takes its name from its seven peaks which resemble the pattern of the big dipper constellation. in guilin, it is the biggest park with an area of 40 hectares and the best natural surroundings. the seven-star cave, also called the sun's resting cave and bi xu cave, one of the most beautiful caves in guilin. it is located deep in putuo hill, one of the seven peaks which are quite famous for having stalagmites, stalactites and other natural formations that resemble animals and landscapes. it has been a favorite tour resort ever since sui and tang dynasties. formed about the same time as the elephant trunk hill, the seven stars cave was once an underwater cave. the one million-year-old cave was originally a section of an underground river. it is about 1km long and the highest point is 27m. the temperature inside the cave is relatively cool and remains 20'c all the year round. the continual seep of water through the rock cracks and the sun light during the day make this tunnel look like a crystal palace. the lovely and singular stalactites in the cave are as white as snow and as fine as jade, and have a seeming transparency as crystals, thus giving the cave an enchanting beauty. the 'jade rabbit', the 'supernatural turtle', the golden lion' and the 'silver snake' all have a life-like quality, and the 'jumping carp', the 'pheasant waiting for the rabbit', the 'two snakes crawling out of one hole', 'pandas gamboling over the stone ball' all command the same vividness. the three characters of 'xi xia cave' were carved on stone at the cave's mouth in a.d.509 during the sui dynasty. for hundreds of years local people believed the cave was the residence of immortals. the rest of this fantastic park is filled with trees and gardens. with its beautiful peaks, caves, there are such well-known tourist spots as dragon hermitage cave, the guilin stele forest, bonsai garden, zoo, flower bridge, putuo hill, moon cave and camel hill, this park has enough to keep any visitor entertained for hours.
