the solitary beauty peak(duxiu feng) is one of guilin's most prominent karst peaks. towering abruptly from the ground with a height of 152 meter, it stands in solitary grace in the center of the ancient jingjiang princely mansion, because of its majesty; it is also described as ''sky-supporting pillar'' in the south. 1500 years ago, during the southern dynasty(420-589), yang yanzhi, governor of guilin and a poet, wrote these lines: none can surpass this solitary peak in beauty, towering in the centre of the town, stately and lofty. it is from this poem that the hill derived its name. on the east side of the hill there are such inscriptions from the qing dynasty as 'southern sky-supporting pillar' and 'purple gown and golden belt. at the foot of the hill are 'study rock', 'peace rock' and 'the crescent pond'. there is a gate built in the 14th century leading to what once was the home of the nephew of a ming emperor, but is now the guangxi teacher's university.

a flight of 306 stone steps leads from the west foot of the hill up to the top. if you climb the steep incline you will be rewarded with beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding hills, the li river and the town of guilin. however, the stairs are very steep and reaching the top can be dangerous. depending on the weather and your experience level, it may be best to explore only part of the way. the stairs to the peak start from a ming dynasty palace on the eastern side of the peak.
