sprawling along the southern bank of the changjiang river, the city of zhenjiang is where the changjiang river meets the grand canal. zhenjiang is known as the "no. 1 city that backs onto the hills and faces the changjaing river under heaven." it is a famous tourist center in china with such scenic spots as jinshan, jiangshan, and beigu hills, and the southern suburban scenic area.
zhenjiang has a long history of silk production. as early as the tang and song dynasties, the jiangchou silk, satin and brocade were already imperial tributes. in 1909, the jiangchou silk was awarded a gold medal at the south asia fair. by now, the city can produce several dozen types of silk fabric including dyed silk, printed silk, silk velvet, and brocade with raised floral designs. these are products exported to many countries.
