xining china zhejiang jiaxing hangzhou ningbo shaoxing zhejiang province ,located on china's southeastern coast, got it name from the qiantang river that flows through the territory, as the qiantang's ancient name was zhejiang ( the zhe river). the topography of zhejiang varies greatly from north to south, providing the traveller with all types of scenery.

some of the most well-known scenic areas in the province are hangzhou's west lake, qiandao (thousand-islet) lake, the xin'an, nanxi, and fuchun rivers, the yandang mountains, the buddhist island of putuoshan, tiantai mountain and the shengsi archipelago. from hangzhou, travellers can set out to explore all the other parts of the province, working their way either southeast or southwest. the first stop heading southeast is the lovely waterside city of shaoxing, home of the famous shaoxing wine. next comes the historic city of ningbo, then from there it is a short hop over to putuoshan, and island where guan yin, the buddhist goddess of mercy, is worshipped in numerous temples.

heading southwest from hangzhou, one can enjoy mountain, lake and river scenery in one route , following first the fuchun and xin'an rivers to qiandao lake, one can then easily reach magnificent huangshan mountain just over the border in anhui province, going directly south from hangzhou, one can go through either jinhua or tiantai to reach wenzhou, a good base for exploring the exotic yandang mountains and the nanxi river. lastly, as zhejiang is one of the provinces that the ancient grand canal passes through, one can also do a tour of canal and visit many lovely old towns that grace the shores of this massive waterway.

zhejiang has been known for centuries for its highly cultured people and civilized way of life. apart from the scenery, therefore, visitors can also appreciate the art and culture representative of the region, such as silk-making tea cultivation, special cuisines, and many historical and archeological sites.
